The 25C Energy Tax Credits, They’ll Be Gone in December

With the arrival of the fall season, planning ahead for a furnace replacement and home-efficiency upgrades, or perhaps a season-ending A/C special, pays off in greater home comfort and energy savings year after year. If you need even more incentives to tackle home-improvement projects early and beat the winter rush, consider taking advantage of federal energy tax credits for qualifying high-efficiency improvements. But schedule a consultation soon with your HVAC contractor because the federal tax credits will disappear at the end of 2013.

High-Efficiency Heating and Cooling

Since this federal tax-incentive program is a credit and not deduction, you can receive a nice $150 credit at tax time and enjoy lower energy bills for installing a high-efficiency furnace, for instance, which runs 20 to 40 percent more efficiently than old furnaces, and with safer operation. Or, if your A/C system under-performed this year, catch an end-of-season special with your HVAC pro to leverage a $300 tax credit.

Home-Efficiency Upgrades

Take full advantage of the available energy tax credits by properly insulating and sealing your home for the new system upgrade. One of the nice perks about insulation upgrades is that insulation is generally good for the life of the home barring external damage, such as from a burst water pipe.

Tax Credit Guidelines

To take advantage of the expiring energy tax credits, your new qualifying system(s) and/or home-efficiency upgrades must be installed by the end of 2013. The tax credit limit is $500, which may be reached by combining home-efficiency upgrades. The HVAC systems included in the 25C energy tax credit are as follows, as long as they meet minimum efficiency requirements:

  • Furnaces and boilers — energy tax credit is up to $150.
  • Central heat pumps and A/C systems — up to $300.
  • Water heaters — up to $300.
  • Sealing and insulating materials (e.g. fiberglass insulation, foam strips, foam spray and/or caulk) – 10 percent of cost up to $500.
