Your Plumbing Needs Preventive Maintenance, Too

Plumbing Pips

It’s easy to take your plumbing for granted, but this can end up costing you in terms of repairs. These fixtures require routine maintenance to help prevent problems from occurring and damaging your home. Doing the following in your home can significantly lower the risk of ending up with major plumbing problems.

Check for Leaks

Look for leaks in or around your faucets, toilets, vanities, outside spigots, and water heater. If you see any leaks occurring, even if they’re minor ones, have them fixed as soon as possible. Doing so helps prevent these leaks from turning into bigger ones that can lead to mold growth, structural problems, and other damage.

Fix Clogs

Your drains can become clogged from food, hair, and other debris, which can lead to additional problems with your pipes due to added pressure on them. Dealing with clogged drains promptly can lower this risk. Use a snake to clear the drain rather than pouring chemical drain cleaning products down them. These products can damage your pipes. You can also take steps to prevent clogs by being careful about what goes down the drains and having screens placed over the drains in your bathtubs and showers.

Lower Water Pressure

Reducing the water pressure in your home can lower the risk of damage to your plumbing fixtures. You can do this by using a low flow when you take a shower or run water in your kitchen and bathroom sinks. You can also have a pressure reducer installed if your home has high water pressure. Use a hose bib gauge on an outside spigot to check your pressure levels first, and consider getting a pressure reducer if the gauge reads above 85 psi.
