A homeowner searching for a new water heater will face an important decision right at the start of the search – whether to go with a traditional storage tank water heater or switch to a new tankless model. While tankless models have their benefits, for many homeowners going with the storage tank model remains the best choice.
Storage tank water heaters are less expensive than tankless heaters, for similar hot water output. They generally don’t require as much maintenance and experience fewer mechanical problems. Installation is quicker, easier and cheaper with a conventional water heater. With gas-fueled water heaters, installation of storage tank models is much easier since venting and plumbing is already provided in most homes. For a tankless model, you’ll likely require retrofits for both the plumbing and venting.
Typically, to serve a large home, a tankless whole-house unit will need to be supplemented by one or more point-of-use tankless heaters. Storage-tank models also deliver water at a consistent temperature, unless your usage spikes because of guests or other unusual circumstances. One disadvantage of a storage tank water heater is standby heat loss. This occurs when heat energy inside the tank escapes to the outside via conduction, and is common in water heaters that stand idle for long periods.
When the water starts cooling off, the heating element kicks on and reheats it. You’re basically paying to heat water that you’re not using.
