Whereas ducts generally require at least a foot of clearance for installation, mini-split systems deliver high-velocity air through a thin conduit that only requires a 3-inch hole in the outer wall. The conduit links the outdoor unit (compressor) with as many as four indoor air handlers. The refrigerant, drain tube and power cable are all housed inside the conduit.

Ductless mini splits are compact, quiet, easy to install, and are more energy-efficient than the highest-rated air conditioners and furnaces. With no potentially energy-wasting ducts involved (ducts waste 20 percent or more heating/cooling energy in the average home), their efficiency ratings top-out well beyond typical ducted systems. The indoor air handlers are independently controlled and monitored, making mini-splits zoning systems. This saves even more energy, as only the zones that need heating or cooling may be operating rather than the entire house.

In addition to the compact size and versatility of mini-splits, installation locations are flexible and convenient, as well. The outdoor compressor may be installed up to 50 feet away from each air handler. The air handlers are easily installed on walls, in a drop ceiling, or as stand-alone floor units. The initial cost of a ductless mini-split is comparable to central A/C systems. However, in addition to energy savings, there are installation savings with no ductwork to install or extend.
