Simple Maintenance Steps for the Sump Pump in Your Wilmington Home

Only regular sump pump maintenance can ensure it’s ready when you most need it. Installed in a sump basin in the basement floor, this device automatically removes the gradual seepage of rising ground water. However, a sump pump may also be called upon to protect against a sudden major inundation due to outdoor flooding or an indoor water line rupture.

Because a sump pump spends most of its service life on standby, proper maintenance is vital to ensure it will function when the need arises.

Every Three Months

  • Disconnect the sump pump power cord from the outlet.
  • Remove any standing water from the basin and clear off any debris that may be blocking the pump inlet screen.
  • Plug the power cord into the outlet.
  • Pour five gallons of water into the basin and observe the pump to verify proper operation of the float switch as it energizes and de-energizes the pump.
  • Go outside and confirm that the discharge pipe is releasing water at the proper location.

Once a Year

  • Unplug the pump from the outlet and remove it from the sump basin.
  • Clean the sump basin and remove all dirt and debris.
  • Clean the exterior of the pump.
  • Remove the pump inlet screen and clean thoroughly.
  • Consult the sump pump maintenance section of the owner’s manual for lubrication requirements. If you don’t have the manual, research the manufacturer’s name, and contact the company’s customer service department.
  • Reinstall the pump in the sump basin and plug the power cord into the outlet.
  • Pour five gallons of water into the basin and observe proper on/off operation of the pump.
  • Outside, make sure the discharge pipe functions properly and that all water drains out of the pipe. Residual water inside the pipe may freeze and block proper discharge.
