Shopping for a New Water Heater? Know What to Look For
Every home obviously needs a water heater, but if you’ve just purchased a house or you’ve been living in yours for some time, you may find that your water heater isn’t working as effectively as it used to. In some cases, your old water heater might even be costing you a lot more money than you think. Use these four tips to help you find the right new water heater for your house.
- Make sure the water heater for your home is large enough to supply hot water for everything you do. Sizing a water heater on your own can be a bit difficult, so getting help from a qualified professional is ideal. If you don’t have a water heater that’s large enough for your home you may not have hot water for showers, dishes and laundry, especially if you have a lot of people living in your house.
- Buy an ENERGY STAR approved water heater. Whether you’re looking for water heater that heats water with natural gas or with electricity, an ENERGY STAR approved water heater will help you save quite a bit of money over a standard water heater.
- Consider a solar water heater if you live in an area that gets a lot of sunshine. A solar water heater can cost you more to buy and install, but using one could cut your hot water bills in half. If you have a big family you could be saving quite a bit of money after the initial cost of the solar water heater is paid for you in a few years.
- Weight costs versus efficiency. Annual average use costs should be weighed against potential savings for more efficient units. If you don’t use much hot water or live alone you may not need the most efficient new water heater.
