Find Out Why Your A/C Is Blowing Hot Air

One of the last things you want to happen on a hot day is for your A/C to blow hot air. On the bright side, at least the air conditioner is running, so you may be able to troubleshoot the issue before calling an HVAC tech.

Troubleshooting Hot Air From Your Cooling System

If your A/C is blowing hot air, try these troubleshooting tips:

  • Thermostat – The first step for thermostat troubleshooting is making sure it’s in “cool” mode and set below room temperature. If you’ve recently installed a new thermostat, there could be a mistake in the wiring and terminals.
  • Air filter – A/C systems need free airflow to function properly. Though the air filter has nothing to do with airflow temperature, it may give you a clue as to why your A/C is blowing hot air. If the filter is dirty, the evaporator coil may be iced up. Change or clean the filter, and check the evaporator.
  • Evaporator – The evaporator coil is generally located above the furnace in a furnace and A/C combination system. If there’s ice accumulation on the evaporator, turn off the A/C and let the ice melt on its own time or turn on “heat” mode. If the ice returns with a clean filter, the problem requires the attention of your HVAC tech.
  • Condenser – The condenser coil is located in the outdoor cabinet. Like the evaporator, the condenser needs to be clean to promote cooling. Wash the cabinet with a garden hose. You may also use the foaming coil cleaner. Spray the grill on the sides of the outdoor cabinet. If none of the preceding troubleshooting tips worked, there may be an electrical problem, such as a worn capacitor, or there could be a refrigerant leak in the system. Both issues require the expertise of your HVAC tech.
