Button Up Your Home Now For The Cooler Weather Ahead
With winter weather just around the corner, it is the perfect time of year to start tackling some of your fall weatherization projects. Preparing your house for the cold weather ahead is a great way to reduce your heating costs while at the same time ensuring that you and your loved ones stay cozy and comfortable all winter long.
Consider adding the following projects to your fall to-do list to maximize your home’s efficiency:
- Seal leaks around windows and doors. If possible, install storm windows throughout your home to further prevent drafts. Alternatively, if you don’t have storm windows, consider buying a window sealing kit from your local hardware store. The plastic sheeting in these kits is nearly invisible once installed and can dramatically reduce air leaks.
- Add insulation around your water heater as well as around any pipes that are exposed to the elements.
- Switch the direction on your ceiling fans so they blow upward toward the ceiling. Warm air rises and this will help circulate it back down into your living space
- During cold weather the openings around pipes, ducts and wires can allow heat to escape. Plug these openings using insulation or spray foam.
- Use a programmable thermostat to control the temperature in your home. Set it to automatically lower the temperature while you are sleeping and while you are at work for big energy savings.
- Schedule a fall furnace inspection. Hiring an HVAC specialist to clean and inspect your furnace can significantly improve its performance. Not only that, but during the inspection, the technician will conduct safety tests for gas leaks, electrical problems and carbon monoxide build-up. You can enjoy peace of mind throughout the heating season knowing that these potential hazards have been dealt with.
