Lowering Your Heating Load
The term, heating load, refers to the amount of work your heating system has to do to keep your home warm. Anything you can do to reduce its effort saves money and lengthens the life of your system, whether it’s forced-air or radiant heating. The work you do also pays off year-round in a more comfortable home.
Inspect the Insulation Levels
Much of the heat loss in your home occurs through the attic. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends at least 16 inches of insulation to prevent heat transfer. If you can see the tops of the joists, you likely need more. During your inspection, look for compacted or moldy areas. Either of these conditions reduces insulation’s effectiveness.
Seal the Air Leaks
- Sensing drafts around windows or on walls means that there are cracks between the exterior and interior walls. Over time, the caulk around window frames shrinks and it may need to be removed and replaced.
- Seeing daylight around exterior door frames indicate worn weatherstripping that needs to be replaced. Put draft blockers or door sweeps at the base of doors to stop air losses.
- Checking around the pipes and vent stacks that exit or enter your home will show where air is seeping out and adding to your heating load. Gaps around chimneys and flues should be sealed with metal flashing, and use expanding foam around pipes or vents.
Deal with the Windows
Heat easily moves through glass and if you don’t have Energy Star or thermal windows, you could be losing a significant amount of heat day and night. If window upgrades aren’t in the budget, consider thermal window coverings to stop the heat flow outdoors. They’re available to match any décor and will work year-round to stop energy transfer.
