Maintenance Tips for Your Home’s Heat Pump

Your heat pump is just like any other type of mechanical equipment — it needs regular maintenance to continue working reliably. Heat pumps that are properly maintained use up to 25 percent less energy, so keeping up with routine preventative care can also reduce your operating costs.

How to Optimize Heat Pump Performance

Scheduling yearly professional maintenance is vital to keep your heating and cooling system running at optimal efficiency. The critical tasks that a certified technician performs should include:

  • Cleaning the blower assembly and coils.
  • Inspecting the ductwork for leaks and obstructions.
  • Testing for adequate system airflow.
  • Lubricating the motor.
  • Examining the belts for wear and tightness.
  • Inspecting the electrical terminals and tightening loose connections.
  • Checking the refrigerant level.
  • Verifying proper thermostat function.
  • Testing the electrical control to ensure the system can’t accidentally switch modes.

In addition to having the system professionally serviced, there are a number of steps you can take to keep your energy bills in check, boost comfort and prevent unnecessary equipment breakdowns and repairs:

  • Examine the air filter monthly and replace it when you see signs of accumulating debris that can restrict adequate system airflow.
  • Wash off the outdoor coil a few times during the year to remove dirt and dust that can block heat transfer and erode energy efficiency.
  • During heating season, keep the thermostat set at 65 degrees or higher. During the summer, avoid setting it below 70 degrees to prevent icing on the coil.
  • In the winter, periodically check for excessive ice or snow accumulations on the outdoor unit. Use cold or warm water to safely remove the buildup, and shut the unit off beforehand.
  • Before switching to cooling mode in the spring, flush the condensate drain and pan.
  • Make sure your programmable thermostat is specifically designed for heat pumps and schedule no more than two daily temperature setbacks.
