How You Can Save Energy in Every Room in Your Home

White Kitchen

As energy costs continue to rise in the Wilmington area, you can keep your utility bills under control by reducing the amount of energy that you use. Here are a few tips that can help you to save energy in every room of your home:

  • Attic: Add extra insulation to the attic floor and seal any holes for wiring, plumbing vents or appliance flues. Insulate and seal the attic door and any air ducts that pass through the attic. Air leaks and heat loss in the attic contribute significantly to energy usage.
  • Basement: Insulate the walls and ceiling of your basement, as well as any ducts running through it. Add an insulating blanket to your water heater, turn the temperature down to 120 degrees and keep it well-maintained.
  • Living Room: Shut off unnecessary lights, and upgrade to LED or CFL lighting. Use a power strip to turn off electronics completely and avoid phantom power draws.
  • Kitchen: Use exhaust fans when cooking or washing dishes to reduce heat and humidity. Choose Energy Star-rated appliances when possible.
  • Bedrooms: Use a programmable thermostat to reduce the temperature and save energy while sleeping during the winter, and raise the temperature during the summer. Use CFL or LED lighting and turn off unnecessary lights or electronics.
  • Bathrooms: Turn on the exhaust fan while bathing and repair any water leaks immediately to avoid water damage and higher hot water usage.
  • Other Areas: Choose an energy-efficient HVAC system, and have it serviced regularly by an HVAC professional to keep it running efficiently. Replace the air filter often. Seal holes in the exterior walls for pipes or wiring, and use weatherstripping or caulk to seal doors and windows.
