How to Control Pollutants in Your Household

Stop Sign

Indoor air quality (IAQ) starts to suffer as the winter goes on, but fortunately there are ways to control pollutants that build in your home. In tightly-sealed homes, IAQ can suffer from daily living and common household products.

Control

Airborne particulates like dust, pet dander and dust mite waste collect indoors and can cause allergic and asthmatic reactions. The first line of defense is to keep the air filter for the furnace clean. Replace it with the best quality your HVAC system can use to trap larger amounts of smaller particulates.

Avoid

Products that have perfumes or were made from petroleum products often off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are known irritants and health hazards. Before purchasing candles, household cleaners, new furniture, paint, or carpeting, look at the label. Some products state they’re low in VOCs or indicate they’re clean-air compliant.

Adding ultraviolet (UV) lights to your home’s forced-air HVAC system also helps manage VOCs by neutralizing them into harmless substances. UV exposure also mutates biological hazards like mold spores, viruses and bacteria by altering their DNA so they can’t reproduce. UV lights are an affordable and easy way to create healthier IAQ year-round.

Ventilate

Fresh air will control pollutants by diluting them, but it’s expensive and time consuming to open doors and windows during the heating season. One way to improve your IAQ throughout the year is to install a heat recovery ventilator (HRV). An HRV delivers fresh air into your home without noticeably increasing your heating or cooling bills. It removes the heat from the stale, outgoing air and puts it into the fresh, incoming air.

In lieu of an HRV, use your kitchen and bathroom ventilation fans to exhaust humid or stale air. High IAQ is important to your health, and your HVAC system is one of the best ways to control indoor pollution.
